Sailing the Amazon
Our first sight of the Amazon was when we woke up at Macapa
The officers had to be vigilant as we cruised at full speed for 900 miles upriver.
We stopped at the beach of Alter do Chao
Sunset near Santorem
Typical shore line where "Slash and Burn" has been used for gaining arable land.
Town of Itacpatiara on the Northern shoreline between Manaus and Santorem.
Meeting of the waters. The Negro and Solimoes tributaries have different colours and run parallel for some distance
We saw some of the smallest river craft.....
....and some of the largest barges. Sunset as we approached Manaus.
We took side cruises to see Amazon backwaters.
Habitation at the edge of the jungle
Dugout canoes are still the main form of transport in the backwaters.
